Toronto Psychotherapy or Therapy in the GTA

Are you looking for a psychotherapist in Toronto or the GTA?

Not sure what the difference is between a psychotherapist and a psychologist?

Psychotherapy is a form of therapy that focuses on improving the mental health of an individual or improving the relationship in a couple/marriage, family or group of individuals (including children) through various communication methods.

Psychotherapists use a variety of techniques to encourage communication, dialogue and behaviour change in patients with the goal of helping them change their destructive or unhealthy behaviours, thoughts and emotions. The primary method of psychotherapy is a spoken conversation between the psychotherapist and the patient or group of individuals. Some other forms of communication include writing, art/drawings, drama/performance, story and music.

Find a Toronto psychotherapist near you to help you with your mental or emotional problems and get you on the path to good mental health.

A psychotherapist is a mental health professional that practices psychotherapy with their patients, such as a psychologist, psychiatrist, psychiatric nurse/social worker, specifically trained clinician, licensed clinical social worker, marriage/couples/family therapist.

•    through a traumatic event, such as sexual abuse, domestic violence, a serious accident or a criminal injury.
•    deal with a relationship issue or family conflict.
•    through a difficult life transition, such as the death of a loved one, a life-threatening illness, divorce, separation or a mid-life crisis.

•    with eating disorders.
•    with matters of gender identity, sexual orientation, racism and oppression if you are face difficulties.
•    to explore spiritual issues, questions of meaning or matters of faith, if you wish.

Common types of psychotherapy techniques used are:

1.    Behaviour modification therapy – The focus is on getting rid of an individual’s undesirable behaviours by providing positive reinforcement for the more desirable behaviours.

2.    Cognitive-behavioural therapy – The focus is on breaking distorted, harmful patterns of thinking that drive the individual’s negative behaviours and replacing them with healthier and more positive ways of thinking.

3.    Family therapy – The focus is on improving the interaction between all family members for the long-term using effective communication and coping skills. It is usually combined with individual therapy.
